Students living in on-campus housing are required to have a meal plan. Meal plans are billed per semester to the student's university billing account.
As part of a student's meal plan, leftover flex dollars carry over from the first semester of an academic year to the second semester of an academic year. Leftover block meals do not carry over from first semester to second semester.
All unused meal plan funds, flex dollars and block meals, do not carry over from one academic year to the next.

This meal plan is restricted to students living on campus beyond their two-year housing requirement, off campus students and employees.
Up to three meals designated for use at Larson Commons each week in select meal plans may be exchanged at select Sodexo-branded retail dining venues for Meal Exchange meals. These venues exclude national brands.
If you do not select a meal plan, you will be assigned the default plan of 90 Block.
- All students living on campus are required to have a meal plan. The only exception is if you are a 2024 or earlier high school graduate and live in Meadows Apartments.
- If you are a 2026 high school graduate, you can only choose a Block Meal Plan.
- If you are a 2025 high school graduate or higher and select a West Flex Meal Plan, we will default you to the Bronze Flex Meal Plan as 2025 and up are not eligible for the West Flex Plan.
The last day to change your fall 2026 meal plan option is Friday, Aug. 28, 2026, at 5 p.m.
The policy for the South Dakota State University Housing and Residential Life Meal Plan Exemption/Accommodation Guidelines and Process are established for students requesting an exemption from the SDSU Meal Plan program. The Meal Plan Exemption Policy covers meal plans for all students required to purchase a meal plan.
