Campanile in the Winter

Monday Message, March 30

Barry H. Dunn, SDSU President
Barry H. Dunn, President

SDSU Community,

A new week begins after our university had such an important and inspiring three days over the weekend, beginning with the inaugural Innovate AI 2026 Symposium in Sioux Falls. The event was a tremendous success that brought together leaders from across industry, government and higher education to explore the rapidly evolving role of artificial intelligence and its impact on our state and region. It was a powerful demonstration of SDSU’s leadership in innovation and our commitment to preparing students for the future workforce.

I would also like to congratulate Sanjeev Kumar, Victor Taylor and Rajesh Kavasseri for their leadership in launching the new Center for AI Innovation and Emergent Technologies. This is an important milestone for our university. As AI continues to reshape industries from health care to agriculture to education, this center will position SDSU to lead in developing the knowledge, skills and ethical framework necessary for success in an AI-driven world.

To establish the center and address challenges related to AI, U.S. Sen. Mike Rounds has secured $750,000 in federal appropriations under the 2026 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies bill. We cannot thank Sen. Rounds enough for his leadership and efforts to help get the center launched.

The center will serve as a hub for interdisciplinary collaboration across teaching, research and community engagement. It will help ensure our graduates are not only proficient in AI tools but also prepared to think critically and apply these technologies responsibly. This effort reflects our land-grant mission and our commitment to serving South Dakota through innovation, workforce development and meaningful research. Additional information about the center will be forthcoming.

I also want to recognize the many individuals who contributed to a busy and successful weekend on campus. Events like Little International, the Wetu Wacipi (spring powwow), home softball, spring volleyball and a high school track meet highlight the depth of our campus community and the meaningful opportunities we provide for learning, engagement and celebration of tradition and culture. Thank you to the student leaders, faculty, staff and volunteers who made these events possible. It was a wonderful time on our campus.

Finally, a reminder that the university will be closed Friday and Monday in observance of the Easter holiday. I hope this extended weekend provides you with an opportunity to spend time with family and friends and to recharge as we continue through the semester.

Thank you for everything you do to support our students and advance South Dakota State University. I hope you have a wonderful week.

Sincerely,

Barry H. Dunn
President
South Dakota State University
