America 250

In 2026, the United States will mark a historic milestone — the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding. Known as America 250, this national commemoration provides an opportunity to reflect on the ideals that shaped the country, recognize the individuals and communities who have contributed to its growth, and inspire future generations to carry forward the promise of opportunity, innovation and service. As South Dakota’s land-grant university, South Dakota State University is proud to play a meaningful role in honoring this historic celebration.

Since its founding in 1881, SDSU has embodied the core values that helped shape the American higher education system. Land-grant universities were created to expand access to education, advance research that benefits society, and strengthen communities through service and outreach. For more than a century, SDSU has advanced these principles by preparing students for meaningful careers, driving innovation across industries and serving as a trusted partner for communities across South Dakota and beyond. America 250 provides a unique opportunity to highlight how SDSU’s mission reflects the nation’s enduring commitment to education, civic engagement and economic progress.

Through academic programming and educational initiatives, SDSU will engage students, faculty and staff in exploring the historical and cultural significance of America 250. Courses, guest lectures, interdisciplinary programming and research initiatives will encourage students to examine American history, civic responsibility and leadership through different perspectives.

Community engagement will play a central role in SDSU’s America 250 efforts. The university will collaborate with local communities, organizations and cultural partners to develop programs that celebrate the voices and experiences that shape American history.

SDSU also plans to host a variety of events and activities that connect campus traditions with the national celebration. Public lectures, exhibits, performances, student-led projects and research showcases will highlight the innovation, creativity and service that define both SDSU and the American experience. These events will create opportunities for alumni, students, faculty, staff and community members to celebrate shared history while recognizing the university’s contributions to the state and nation.

As the nation commemorates 250 years of independence, South Dakota State University remains committed to honoring America’s legacy while preparing for the future and is proud to help celebrate America 250.
