Agronomy topics for crops of all kinds will be the focus of the 2025 South Dakota State University Dakota Lakes Research Farm Field Day. Oats, winter wheat, field peas, chickpeas and corn will all be discussed by university experts as part of the June 26 event from 3 p.m. until dark at 21310 308th Ave., Pierre.

SDSU horse sale revived after more than 20 years
Last month, for the first time in more than 20 years, the South Dakota State University Horse Unit held a public sale of horses from its herd. The unit, located within the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences on the university’s Brookings campus, has been recognized by the American Quarter Horse Association as a reputable breeder for 70 years and welcomes 10-13 foals each spring.

SDSU West River Research Farm to host its first-ever precision agriculture field day
New precision agriculture technology designed to help farmers improve their field scouting and livestock grazing will be demonstrated as part of the West River Research Farm Field Day next week. The event will run 3-7 p.m. MT on Wednesday, June 11, at 13370 Alkali Road, Sturgis.

SDSU signs cooperative agreement with University of Debrecen
Representatives from South Dakota State University and the University of Debrecen came together in Hungary last month to sign an academic cooperation agreement, making official a partnership that will connect the precision agriculture programs of both universities.

SDSU claims NASA Blue Skies victory
Four mechanical engineering students from South Dakota State University found a way to make drones more useful for farmers and won a prestigious NASA contest in the process.  The first-place SDSU team was one of eight finalists in NASA’s Gateways to Blue Skies contest, which this year had a theme of AgAir: Aviation Solutions for Agriculture.
